South Dade dismantled the rest of the field at the Region 4-3A Wrestling Championships this past weekend and are sending 13 wrestlers to the FHSAA State Championships. The BUCS are looking to win their 5th tradition team state championship in a row and 14th overall. Back in January of this year South Dade won the inaugural FHSAA Dual Meet State Championship and hope to do the same this upcoming weekend.

South Dade was led by their two returning state champions; Brevin Balmeceda and Bretli Reyna. Balmeceda, a 2x defending state champion is a junior at the 152-pound weight class and won his 4th consecutive Regional Championship. Bretli Reyna is only a sophomore and is the defending state champion. This was his 2nd Regional title in a row.

"State will be a regular tournament for me. I mean, I'm excited to win my third state championship but I have won bigger tournaments than state so I am confident I can win this one," stated Balmeceda. He is 60-1 on the year and has compiled an overall high school record of (265-17). When all is said and done, Brevin Balmeceda can hold the state record for overall wins.

South Dade scored a tournament high 303.5 team points. Southwest Miami was a distant runner up with 158.5 points. The BUCS had a total of 9 individual Regional Champions including Balmeceda and Reyna. Senior, Corey Harvey won his third consecutive regional title. Todd Perry Jr and Mikaelle Fundora both brought back their second regional title. Luis Peraza, Joshua Swan, Fritz Doublas and Trayvonne Jackson all won their first regional title. Isaac Duran, Tyler Orta and Kenneth Crouse punched their ticket to state placing 3rd at regionals and Miguel Flores qualified by placing 4th.
