Dade County Farm Bureau board members Sal Finocchiaro and Kern Carpenter, along with Executive Director Jorge Abreu and Miami-Dade County Agricultural Manager Charles LaPradd traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet up with Florida Farm Bureau and other county Farm Bureau’s for the annual Field to the Hill.

Their charge was to advocate on how South Florida has been affected by NAFTA, the Farm Bill and H2A and immigration reform. As we continue to battle below cost imports and low wages from South and Central America competing with our growers, there is some hope of a renegotiation of NAFTA.

The questions are still when will it happen and will it be enough. It was stressed that our farmers are not subsidized. Land conservation and insurance was discussed on the Farm Bill. Housing has been a challenge for H2A farm labor, and along with that the system needs to be adjusted. This discussion has been going on for many years and we hope some agreement will be made. We will continue to contact our elected officials and their staff and ask that the community do the same.

Meetings were held with Congressman Curbelo, Ros-Lehtinen, Yoho and staff from Senator Rubio, Nelson, Congressman Diaz-Balart, Wasserman-Schultz, and Wilson. We were also able to meet with staff from the USTR on NAFTA and USDA on aid for hurricane Irma relief.

Dade County Farm Bureau represents over 3,000 members. Dade County farmers provide an economic impact of over $2.57 billion to the local and state economy.

I think the NAFTA should sit with farmers and decide what’s best for the land and the farm and then decide what to do write my assignment with the economy, whether to raise subsidies or decrease them. It should decide with them and then form a bill.
