On Friday March 1st, Congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell along with Congresswoman Donna Shalala, held a press conference at Gould’s Gym in The Gould’s community to announce the passage of two federal bills to curb gun violence. These reforms would close several gun purchasing loopholes and require universal background checks. The legislation now moves to the Senate.

Mucarsel-Powell is a member of the Judiciary Committee and Gun Violence Prevention Task Force.

They were joined by local pastors, elected officials, and gun advocacy groups like Mothers Fighting for Justice and Moms Demand Action.

HR8-The first bill is about universal background checks and closes the gun show and internet sale loopholes.

HR1112 - closes the Charleston Loophole. Under current law, if your background check takes more than three days, you’re automatically approved to purchase your firearm.

The new law would extend that time to 10 days.
