On Wednesday, February 14th, we will celebrate Valentine’s Day. What is Valentine’s Day all about? Hearts, flowers, candy, gifts, special words which all come down to one thing. LOVE! Yes, Wednesday is a day to express your love.

Thinking about it, there are several types of love. Webster’s has several definitions of love but the number one definition is, “a strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties.

We love our family members. We have a special love in our hearts for our parents, our children, our siblings, etc. Even though we may argue and disagree, there is a special love for those for whom we have personal ties. Now don’t get me started on loving a grandchild. Oh my! I often tell people who are waiting on their first grandchild that yes, you love your children but just wait! When you have a grandchild, it is truly a special love and the strongest love you will ever feel.

The second definition of love is an attraction based on sexual desire. Whether we have a secret crush on that special someone, are dating or married, we have felt this type of love. It can be overwhelming at times and ultimately, if the love continues, it eventually strengthens as it becomes the number one type of love with personal ties. Yes, I love Mr. Wonderful even though I could strangle him sometimes and vice versa. Dishes piled in the sink…bed unmade…and I could go on but still the love far exceeds those things I see as flaws.

The third type of love is affection based on admiration, benevolence or common interests. As I grow older, I realize there are many people who I love and I am not afraid to tell them either. Years ago, I would have thought it strange to end a conversation with a friend by saying, “I love you.” But now that I am older, I realize that I do love special people in my life. I love the older friend who guide me and advise me. When I go home to Pennsylvania and visit friends and classmates, I realize that our friendships have endured over time and I truly do have a special love for these people. Yes, I love them and I tell them!

Of course, there are other types of love. Oooh did I tell you I love chocolate and peanut butter. I love God as well but He should probably be under the number 1 type of love as I have a special relationship with Him.

Love is something that is bigger than we are. Love is unpredictable. We cannot contain it. Love is inherently compassionate and empathic.

Everyone realizes that being told that you are loved is exhilarating. Those three words, “I love you” can change make a person’s day or life. So this Wednesday, reach out to someone special and say those three words…”I love you” and I hope you hear it said by many.

Happy Valentine’s Day.
