If you haven’t noticed, there is an anticipation in the air.  Perhaps this week you saw the haulers driving off the turnpike toward east Homestead.  You can also see it around town with the banners that fly in front of businesses.  Motels and hotels are ready.  Restaurants have placed larger orders.  Businesses gave away tickets.  Homestead is ready.  For what?  Where have you been?  Homestead is ready for the 2017 Ford EcoBoost Championship Weekend!

Friday evening, November17th, at 8 p.m., the green flag will wave from the tower signaling the start of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series as drivers battle to see who will be the champion!  The race under the lights is often the most exciting as these are the youngsters who would love to move up in NASCAR and they drive like they mean it!  Fans sit in the stands with the cool breeze blowing (hopefully) while everyone in Homestead hears the roar of the trucks.  Soon the checkered flag will declare the champion.

Saturday the festivities start early with the gates opening at 9:30 am.  Sure, the race to determine the NASCAR XFINITY Series champion doesn’t start until 3:30 pm but oh boy, the things to do before the race!  You won't want to miss the Monster Energy Action Show before the Ford EcoBoost 300! Watch a stunning live performance of professionals on motorcycles!  How about the Cornhole Tournament being held in the RV section?  Are you a good player?  Be sure to be in the stands prior to the race to see the South Dade News Leader’s winner of their NASCAR contest.  These students will be honored on stage prior to the race and the grand prize winners will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.  What an honor for our local students!

Finally, the anticipation builds up to the big race.  On Sunday, the gates open at 9:30 and the first event is the Ford Car Show.  At 11:30, some of the greatest MMA fighters in the world square off in the ring!  The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series comes to a close at the Ford EcoBoost 400 with a 2:30 pm start.

What happens at the racetrack before the races?  As you can read above, so much entertainment!  Bands, booths with games, freebies, and oh, did I happen to mention the food?  Take your kiddies to the “Kids Zone” and let them have a good time.  So much to do…so little time!

What happens in Homestead before and after the races?  Visitors come into our places of business.  They come to stay at our area hotels.  They come to eat at our local restaurants.  They come to our tourist attractions.  They come to shop in our local stores and pick-up supplies.

I debated attending the races this year due to my mother’s passing and funeral this week but then I decided that she, of all people, would tell me to “Sissy…get out there and go!  I don’t want you sitting around and moping.”  So, I called up my “race husband” (my best friend’s husband who attends with me) as Mr. Wonderful will be at his Canes game, and I may miss Friday’s race due to flying in late but I will be present on Saturday and Sunday.  I’ve got my sunscreen, hat and ear plugs and I’ll be ready to go.  Every year it’s the same feeling…the chubby girl in the candy shop!  So much to see, hear, taste and do!

Yes Homestead, it is here!  Put out your welcome mat to the visitors to our area as we are so fortunate to have this event in our backyard.  Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines!
