It’s impossible to remember the last time a room full of more than 100 elementary school students was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

Adults were the ones making noise at the League of Cities backpack give-away at the Laura Saunders Elementary School of Tuesday August 26.

The successful program in its fourth year was hosted in the school’s large, light-filled library brimming with books.

Guests entering the school grounds were greeted by a gauntlet of well-dressed students like Cliff and Rebecka, assigned to welcome their visitors.

The current president of the Miami Dade League of Cities chooses the school to benefit from the backpack program.

Village of Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner serves as president this year.

Homestead Councilman Jon Burgess is next year’s League president.

The League was founded in 1953 with current membership of 34 cities throughout Miami-Dade County.

“It’s a blessing the needs are not so great in Pinecrest,” said Lerner. “I asked (School Board member) Dr. Feldman’s office to suggest a school with greater needs and they identified this one.”

“We’re in partnership with the School Board,” said the League’s executive director Richard Kuper. “The League collected funds at a dinner last year for the backpacks. We have lunch boxes for each student, too.”
