Three other people from different vehicles were injured and also transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital South.

Miami-Dade Police say the accident occurred at 5:58 a.m. on SW 12th Avenue, near SW 256 Street and just south of the Florida Turnpike.

The students were in a southbound Scion when they lost control and struck a northbound Honda Odyssey. They then collided with a Oldsmobile SUV.

The wreckage ended up in an empty field on SW 112th Avenue.

Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho sent out a tweet after hearing the news, saying “Prayers go out to the families of the high school students involved in this morning’s tragic accident.”

The cause of the crash has not been determined but police are investigating if speed was a factor.
