Two Homestead Senior High School students were involved in a roll-over, car crash on Tuesday morning. One student was killed and another severely injured as their car split in two and the students were ejected. The injured student was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital South
Three other people from different vehicles were injured and also transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital South.
Miami-Dade Police say the accident occurred at 5:58 a.m. on SW 12th Avenue, near SW 256 Street and just south of the Florida Turnpike.
The students were in a southbound Scion when they lost control and struck a northbound Honda Odyssey. They then collided with a Oldsmobile SUV.
The wreckage ended up in an empty field on SW 112th Avenue.
Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho sent out a tweet after hearing the news, saying “Prayers go out to the families of the high school students involved in this morning’s tragic accident.”
Police will not release identification of those involved in the crash as they are under 18. Reports are that both students were 15 years of age.
The cause of the crash has not been determined but police are investigating if speed was a factor.
