After a 14-6 win over Coral Gables in the opener, the South Dade Buccaneers vowed to be better in the second game.

They were.

Senior quarterback Demetrius Burns led the charge accounting for all six touchdowns in a 42-0 rout of Southwest.

“It’s supposed to happen,” Burns said. “Play trash, we take the trash out. That’s what our coach tells us.”

Burns completed 14 of 22 passes for 326 yards with four touchdown passes to Najeh Baker (44 yards), Demetrius Randolph (23), Frank Ladson (55), and Melchelzadek Mathews (30) while adding two short touchdown runs.

Baker (117 yards), Ladson (98), and Randolph (55) each had four receptions in the game while Mathews had two for 56 yards.

“It’s a blessing,” Burns said. “That’s the best feeling when you have more than one person to go to. It opens everything up. The defense can’t focus on one player.”

South Dade (2-0) started a bit slow leading 13-0 until scoring quick touchdowns in the final 1 minute, 19 seconds of the first half including the 55-yard touchdown pass to Ladson with five seconds left to take a 28-0 lead into the break and the second half had a running clock after soon getting up by 35.

“I think after a while after we started getting going, guys started getting a little momentum and we settled down right before the half, which was good,” head coach Nate Hudson said. “I talk about us being a resilient team and there’s a reason why and that’s because we always put ourselves in those

situations. Ultimately at the end though we got stronger.”

Junior Jaiden Francois intercepted his third pass of the season and junior Terrell Battle had a sack and recovered a fumble on successive plays in the third quarter to help lead the defense, which held Southwest (1-1) to 50 total yards.

“Coming off our mistakes from last week we pretty much had the right game plan,” Francois said. “We just executed the plays like we were supposed to.”

The Buccaneers will look to carry the momentum into Friday’s game against Northwestern (1-1), the defending 6A state champions, as the teams will square off at Harris Field at 7:30 p.m.

“The challenge is really keeping them focused,” Hudson said. “I think at times we get a little bit sidetracked of our success and I think it’s also the growing process.”

South Dade is hosting a pregame tailgate at 5 p.m. and are asking fans to bring their own food and drink. The Buccaneers are asking fans to wear black for the “Black Out” themed game.
