Due to the recent emergence of legal precedents that challenge American civil liberties and/or hinder access to the democratic process, it is essential to seize opportunities that bring about restorative forms of justice. Thus, the Iota Pi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, Fraternity Inc., in collaboration with the Public Defenders’ office of Carlos J. Martinez, have taken up the task of further entrenching ourselves in civic engagement geared towards those populations who are most in need of the aforementioned restorative justice. It is our hope that by hosting a seal and expungement workshop we can begin to level the scales of equity and justice in our local community.
Furthermore, we hope that by providing these services, participants can hopefully regain equitable access to the workforce, education, and the political arena. With this goal in mind our organization has decided to target the often marginalized -and forgotten community of Florida City, and offer a seal and expungement workshop. Such a project has the potential to bring solace to hundreds of families and we believe that a project of this scope may serve as an impetus to many others who wish to engage in future social service endeavors.
Legal experts, as well as representatives from state administrative offices, will provide their services at no cost to attendees. Event facilitators will also help answer questions and determine what services event attendees may best qualify for. Correspondingly, qualifying participants will be guided by onsite staff who will help to prepare their Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Application for Certification of Eligibility, and gather all necessary documents that must be submitted with the application (Note: while the event/services provided are free of charge, the FDLE does require that a $75 fee be paid to complete the application process).
