When’s the last time you really laughed a belly shaking laugh?  Are you overdue for one?  Actor’s Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre on Miracle Mile in Coral Gables is the place to go for your comedy fix.  The theatre is ending their season with the belly busting comedy, Real Men Sing Show Tunes…and play with puppets.

The show, directed by David Arisco, stars co-authors, Paul Louis and Nick Santa Maria who are joined by Stephen G. Anthony and a multitude of puppets. Manny Schvartzman, musical director, has a melodious workout as he tickles the ivories with perfection through the entire show.

A man’s life is the subject matter. What does it take for a real man to exist in the real world? You will find out as the men journey through dating, marriage, fatherhood and sexuality through songs such as Guy Talk, Married Man’s Lament and Mortality Blues.  One of the funniest numbers was about what men do at urinals.  Women are dying to know.  Now I know.

During one number, Married Man’s Lament, the men sing, “I used to have a penis” which could have presented an unacceptable situation for some however the way it was dealt with left young and old alike in tears from laughing so hard.

On the other hand, the production also featured a few serious, emotional numbers such as dealing with parenthood and growing old.  I know tears welled up in my eyes at one point thinking of my late father and his love for me.  There is one word to describe this play – hysterical. From the moment it began until the closing song, the audience roared.

The play runs through August 12th, 2012 and tickets are $40.  If you have never gone and fear traffic, don’t.  I left Homestead at 5 p.m. and arrived at the public parking garage behind the theatre at 5:45 p.m. and this costs $6 to park at the end of the night but you must have cash.

On the north end of the garage there is a walkway that takes you right out by the theatre.  We then go to dinner and there are so many places within walking distance including some of our favorites, John Martin’s Irish Pub, Season’s 52 and California Pizza Kitchen.  This time frame works great as the show begins at 8 p.m. and we usually finish leisurely dining around 7:15. All in all, a great night.

Warning, if you go to this show, do not chew on a mint as you may end up swallowing it whole as I did while laughing. Real Men Sing Show Tunes - a must see!
